今週末は友達の結婚式に招待され、イギリスの南にある「Northampton」に行ってきた。

（ところで今そのことを書いて、なぜ南にあるところを「North」、つまり「北」、と呼ぶのかなと不思議に思った。）

どこかに行く度に必ず小説を持って行くのだが、ほとんどの場合は小説を開かないまま持って帰ってしまう。しかし、作家・李 琴峰の独り舞を読み始めたら、放っておけなかった。赤ワインを飲みながらホテルのベッドで読んだり、ド田舎の結婚式に向かう直前まで夢中になったり、エジンバラに帰るための電車を待っていた時にも読んだりして、週末中に読み切った。

I started Li Kotomi’s Solo Dance while waiting for a friend in London this weekend, and – unlike most books I take away with me (which end up back on my bedside table a few days later, a little more battered but no more read) finished it in a couple of days. I was completely drawn in, and read it while drinking red wine in pyjamas in our hotel room, before walking along country fields to our friend’s wedding, and in the gaps between my many trains back to Edinburgh.

独り舞では、ゲイの台湾人の女性が日本に引っ越し、名前を変え、自分のトラウマと過去から逃げようとする。仕事では過去のこととゲイのアイデンティティを隠そうとするが、簡単なことではないということにある日気がづく。自分を受け入れてくれるコミュニティを探しながら、こどもの頃から死を意識している彼女はどんどん死に近づく。

こんな暗い本を今読むべきなのかな～と、読みながら思ったけど、あっという間に読んでしまった。

Solo Dance tells the story of Cho Norie, a Taiwanese woman who moves to Japan to escape the ‘shackles of her past’. Referred to simply as ‘she’ for most of the book, our protagonist is stuck between trying to hide her sexuality and past trauma from colleagues, whilst struggling to find community and moving ever deeper into her obsession with death. This was a dark book, and even as I was wondering whether I should be reading this kind of thing while I’ve been struggling with my own mental health, I couldn’t put it down.

この小説で李琴峰を初めて読んだけど、彼女の作品をもっと読みたくなってきた。今までは「独り舞」だけが英訳されているので、これからはオリジナルの日本語版を読んでみる。

ちなみに、母国語ではない日本語で書き、しかも芥川賞を受賞した李 琴峰はすごいなと思う。

I can see myself becoming a bit of a Li Kotomi fangirl. This is (I think) her first major work to be translated into English, and I now want to go back and read her entire back-catalogue in Japanese.
